Shymkent: Results of the First Year of Implementation of the ЕС IFAS–AFD Project

On 27 January 2026, the first regional workshop on the dissemination of results of the joint project of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (EC IFAS) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) was held in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. The project, entitled “Correction of hydromodule zoning of the Syrdarya river basin using remote sensing data and satellite mapping technologies for correction of water consumption and irrigation regimes for agricultural crops cultivated in the region” (the Project), was presented to a wide range of stakeholders.

Specialists from the Kazakh Research Institute of Water Economy and the Scientific Information Center of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (SIC ICWC)—the leading organizations of the region involved in scientific research and analytical activities—reported on the work carried out during the first year of Project implementation and its interim results. Participants were presented with preliminary materials on the correction of hydromodule zoning, as well as the results of field surveys and analytical studies.

The discussion brought together representatives of government authorities, scientific and water management organizations from both countries, members of the farming community, and Project experts, ensuring a broad exchange of views and practical observations.

The Project is implemented with grant support from AFD and covers more than 1.7 million hectares of irrigated land in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, including the Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions, as well as the Andijan, Namangan, and Fergana regions of the Fergana Valley.
