CAWEC Project Launched at the 94th Meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination of Central Asia

 

In the city of Turkistan, Republic of Kazakhstan, the 94th Meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination of Central Asia (ICWC) was held with the participation of N. Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan; D. Dzhuma, Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan; D. Gendzhiev, Chairman of the State Committee for Water Resources of Turkmenistan; and Sh. Khamrayev, Minister of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Kyrgyz side participated as an observer.

During the meeting, the heads of the water management authorities of the countries of the region discussed the launch of the grant-funded Regional Cooperation Project of Central Asian Countries on Improving Water Resources Use Efficiency (CAWEC), implemented by the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea with the support of the World Bank.

A ceremonial exchange of folders containing the signed Financing Agreement for the CAWEC Project with the World Bank Group took place.

The objective of the project is to promote climate-resilient investments and strengthen the capacity of regional institutions for water resources management in Central Asia.

The project implementation period is five years.

CAWEC comprises three key regional components:

  1. Preparation of Transboundary Projects;
  2. Information Support and Digitalization;
  3. Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building.
