On October 29, 2024, a meeting took place at the office of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) between the Chairman of EC IFAS, A. Orazbay, and Italy’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, E. Cirelli. The Italian delegation also included senior representatives from SOGESID SPA.
During the meeting, both sides explored ways to strengthen cooperation, including the development of projects aimed at reducing environmental damage in the Aral Sea basin. They agreed to conduct a comprehensive study on the regional impact of climate change as part of the partnership. E. Cirelli mentioned that future joint projects might be eligible for EU funding.
The parties agreed to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding between the EC IFAS and SOGESID SPA, a state company specializing in engineering and technical assistance.
The Italian government expressed interest in promoting a shared model of reconstruction and restoration in the Aral Sea basin, based on Italy’s expertise. This initiative marks the beginning of a long-term project for the socio-ecological revival of the Aral Sea, involving multi-sectoral dialogue with local and international stakeholders.
